WhatsApp recently rolled out a new update for Android smartphones that replaces the top navigation bar with a redesigned bottom navigation bar. This is a significant change to the app’s interface and aims to improve the user experience and accessibility within the app. The Meta-owned messaging service has declared that it has replaced the four navigation tabs (Communities, Chats, Status and Calls) located at the top of the screen to the bottom.
This new update was enabled on the beta version of the app for the last few months, and now, it is enabled for all Android WhatsApp users. The updated design makes it easier for users to switch between tabs while using the smartphone with only one hand.
While the navigation sections remain consistent with the previous layout, the messaging app has made notable changes to enhance navigation efficiency. One of the key changes is the renaming of sections, with Status now renamed as ‘Updates.’ In addition to that, all four sections are now accompanied by distinct icons. The app has also undergone a colour change, which has updated from the familiar green to a minimalist white, offering a modern and fresh look to the interface.
WhatsApp shared a post on X announcing the rollout of the new bottom navigation bar on Android. It captioned, “Android friends, we moved some things around to make it easier to access what you need, and when you need it, meet your new navigation tools. Closer to your thumbs and easy on the eyes.”
The introduction of the bottom navigation bar on WhatsApp for Android is one of the most noteworthy changes that reflects WhatsApp’s commitment to continuous improvement and user-centric design. Apart from the bottom navigation tabs, WhatsApp is busy developing more features that could provide a more enjoyable and streamlined user experience in the future.
Reportedly, the messaging service is working to develop the ability to make international payments via the app using the NPCI’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) in India. In addition to that, the messaging service is also looking forward to adding new AI-powered features to the app that will let users provide text prompts to create stickers using artificial intelligence (AI).
Likewise, WhatsApp was recently seen developing AI-powered image editing tools as well as a feature that allows users to ask meta-AI questions using the search bar on WhatsApp. These features are yet to be introduced to WhatsApp users on both the beta and stable versions.
