Instagram’s New Feature Lets You Leave People On ‘Seen’ Without Them Knowing

Instagram has slowly been building its DM features, and at this point in time, the messaging experience you get on the platform is quite feature-rich and comprehensive. But at the end of the day, it still lacks several features, such as being able to turn on read receipts, which other dedicated messaging apps, such as Meta’s own WhatsApp, have.

This is changing soon as Instagram is getting a new feature where you will be able to turn off read receipts, just like WhatsApp. Announcing the same on his Instagram channel, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said that this feature is currently under testing and will be coming to the platform. “If you’re someone who tends to leave people on read, your time has come. We’re experimenting with the ability to disable read receipts on Instagram DMs,” Zuckerberg said in his channel.

Instagram chief Adam Mosseri also shared screenshots of how this feature would work on Instagram. Once you turn off ‘read receipts,’ Instagram won’t inform the other person that you have ‘seen’ their message. This could be handy for someone who occasionally forgets to reply to people seeing their messages. However, if you turn off the read receipts feature and use Vanish mode, the other party can see if you have seen their messages on Instagram.

We don’t know when this feature would be rolling out fully, but considering Zuckerberg has said that this feature would be out soon and is under testing, we expect it shouldn’t be long before you can start leaving people on read without them knowing.

In related news, Instagram is adding the option to add song lyrics to Instagram Reels, just like stories. Now, when you edit your Reel, you can tap the music icon to add a song, and then swipe left to add lyrics to your Reel.
